Sponsors Needed for Our Classroom Reef Project
Our class reef system is very important to us. Students are studying complex marine biology and chemistry, learning concepts previously thought to be far about their grade level. They are beginning to independently operate the reef system. They take great pride in their work and are very invested in the maintenance and growth of our marine ecosystem.
But...we can complete this project on our own. I have invested 20+ thousand dollars of my own money to build the initial system but I can't maintain or grow it on my own. Our class is looking for support from our local community and the global reef aquarium community to help us with supplies and livestock. Students are on a letter writing campaign to spread the word, often sacrificing their free time to write letters to potential donors. We will take help in any way and from whoever we can. If you or your organization is interested in donating please contact me through this website.
Supplies can be mailed to our school address:
Coral Reef Ecosystem Project
Stratton Elementary
902 n. Randolph st.
Champaign IL 61820
Below is list of items that we desperately need to support this project. They are recommended supplies only, we aren't choosy. If you have any unused marine aquarium products or want donate a similar product from a different manufacturer, please send it to us. Eventually I would like to expand the reef system to many more classrooms and for that we will needs lots of hardware and dry goods.

Any Kind of Coral/AnemonesWe have lots of room in our tank for any kind of marine reef critters. Our tank is best suited for lps and soft corals but we'll take anything that we can get. Really...if you have some frags of any kind of coral you don't want, send it our way. If shipping is a concern, please contact us and we'll try to work something out. Our students like Anemones and zoanthids the best but we aren't picky.
Any Kind of Reef Safe FishRight now we have a mated clown pair and one algae eating blenny called Lloyd. Any kind of compatible reef friendly fish is welcome.
Reef SaltsOur class does about 60 gallons of water changes a week to maintain the health of our system and we go through a lot of salt. We love the quality and economical price of Reef Crystals but will take and use any kind that is donated.

Dry Goods and Miscellaneous Hardware
Any Kind of Reef Safe InvertebrateWe have a sea star and a couple of hermit crabs and snails, but we're in bad need of a 'cleanup crew'. Emerald or hermit crabs, peppermint or reef cleaner shrimp, conchs, and urchins are all welcome. I really like the quality of invertebrates from liveaquaria.com
Coral FoodTo promote strong coral growth we use a variety of liquid and powder coral foods. We currently use whatever food we can get our hands on, but our favorites are all of the reef nutrition, coral frenzy, and Limpit's Reef Buffet.
